Scary Moment at the Dog Park

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Yesterday, Jess, Liam and I took the dogs to the dog park.  Westie and Lucie absolutely love it there!  However, right before we left, Westie wanted to play with a Boxer.  So Westie did what she always does – she gave a playful nip at the Boxer to get the dog to chase her.  The Boxer responded with a playful pawing, but was way too strong.  Westie thought this very hard hit was an attack.  So Westie began to snarl and tried to bite the Boxer.  The Boxer thought this was more playing (or maybe fighting) and tried to tackle Westie.  I then tried to grab the Boxer, but it’s an agile dog.  As the Boxer cornered Westie, fear swept over Westie.  She began letting out a high pitched squeal and whine that we have only heard from Lucie (when Lucie got stepped on by a big dog a year ago).  I finally was able to grab the Boxer until the owner came over a few seconds later to hold him while Jess picked up Westie.  We departed from the park as quickly as we could.  The owners inquired about Westie’s health and we let them know she was just scared.  Lots of water comforted Westie.

Dissertation Rough Draft Done

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I praise God for helping me finish the “second” rough draft of my dissertation!  I turned it in yesterday to my dissertation adviser at 12:30pm.  From the Title Page to the last page of the Bibliography, it is 179 pages long.  Without the title page, table of contents, appendices, and bibliography, it is 141 pages long.  That number will almost certainly increase when I get more research done and more comments back from my adviser and later my committee.  It feels good because I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel, but much work is left to be done.  I pray that God helps me get it done completely over the next two months that I have left.

Updates on Liam

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Liam has been very mobile lately. He tries to crawl to the farthest corners of the house when he sees something interesting, like a vent or a dog’s toy or especially flip flops! His method of transportation is a half crawl. He takes both arms together and pulls his body across the floor as fast as he can. He has an incredibly strong upper body. He is also interested in my laptop case.
.
In the past three weeks, Liam has been introduced to: brocolli, lima beans, pears, spinach, and squash. Brocolli was alright; lima beans were fine; pears were too sweet unless mixed with oatmeal then fantastic; spinach was a weird texture for him unless mixed with sweet potato and then great; squash is very good.
.
Just a couple of days ago Liam has learned to clap just a little with his hands (a couple of smacks in a row) after Jess and I spent some time teaching him. He has been clapping his feet together for weeks.
.

Changing Liam:  If it is during the day, he is going to try and turn over immediately.  This makes it extremely difficult to change him.  Jess has learned the skill of changing him upside down.  I have to resort to giving him a stuffed bunny to distract him long enough to change him until I can learn the skill.  I better do it quick, he’s starting to catch on that it’s just a distraction technique.

.

We ran out of pears for this morning, so I just fed Liam plain oatmeal.  He enjoyed it despite not having any sweet fruit to go with it.

.
This morning Liam discovered how to push a button on one of his toys. He then kept pushing it over and over again because it made sound when he did it. I have a video, but unfortunately I had to do it quick so I used our camera and there is no sound.

Dissertation and Concert

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I turned in a draft of my dissertation yesterday. But then there was a change of plans. I am going to write the conclusion chapter and turn in the dissertation on Monday. On Tuesday, Jess, Liam, and I went to a Casting Crowns / Tenth Avenue North concert. It was absolutely awesome!
